the proposal

It was a rainy day in Paris.

It was the day before we were set to leave to go home, and we had pretty much done all the traditional touristy stuff we had hoped to do:  the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, the Louvre, macarons from Ladurée... So we decided to spend our last day in Paris strolling through the Jardin des Plantes, visiting the museum of the Arab World Institute, and going to see the Frank Gehry-designed Cinémathèque building. Though overcast and rainy early in the day, it did not stop us from enjoying the beauty of the city and some amazing art and architecture.
At the Gehry building, we started to head back in the direction of our Airbnb and discuss how we would spend the rest of the evening. The Cinémathèque sits right by a park, Parc de Bercy. We were slowly wandering through it when we came upon an odd circular formation, half of which was comprised of tree rounds, and the other half of stone boulders. It was like a battleground between the wood and stone. We just laughed because it was like Kevin, the Woodworker, versus Lauren, the Inorganics Conservator! (And yes, we are aware of how nerdy this sounds.)

We started taking pictures and having fun with it, Kevin on a wooden stump, and Lauren on a stone boulder. And that is when Lauren turned around to see Kevin kneeling on his stump, and we both knew it was the perfect moment.

Long story short:  Kevin asked, and Lauren said yes.

But then something really magical happened. Just as we were tearfully hugging each other, the sun came fully out for the first time that day, and we found ourselves squinting through the tears as the sun shone down on us.

It was perfect.
